Pune, Feb 28 (NationPress) The Pune Police Commissioner announced that a reward of Rs 1 lakh will be granted to the last informant in the arrest case of Dattatray Gade, charged in the Pune bus rape case. Authorities are also looking into whether Gade attempted to take his own life following the incident.

Following Gade's capture in his native village of Gunat in Maharashtra's Shirur taluka, Pune Police Commissioner Amritesh Kumar expressed gratitude to the villagers for their assistance in apprehending the accused involved in the sexual assault of a 26-year-old woman on a state transport bus at the Swargate bus depot.

Kumar stated that the police would reward the last informant from the village and that the villagers would be recognized for their support during the search operation. He mentioned that the accused would be presented in court later that day.

"After reviewing 23 CCTV cameras in the bus depot and 48 cameras outside it, we identified the suspect within a span of one and a half to two hours. Despite two days of searching, the accused eluded capture until today. We plan to visit the village to honor the citizens, particularly those who assisted us," Kumar said.

"Thanks to the tip-off we received from the last informant, we were able to detain the suspect. The information indicated that Gade had gone to fetch water and subsequently fled. This crucial lead helped the police to apprehend him using a drone. The last informant will receive the promised Rs 1 lakh reward," the police commissioner elaborated.

He added that further considerations for the villagers' support would be made.

"According to the initial medical examination, the accused had rope marks around his neck. He claimed to have attempted suicide after the assault. However, he survived as the rope broke and bystanders approached the bus," Kumar stated.

He also indicated that a team would be sent to investigate the alleged suicide attempt, noting the rope mark observed during the examination.

Meanwhile, Rupali Chakankar, chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women, commended the police's efforts, asserting that the Commission is advocating for a death penalty for the accused.
