Mumbai, March 3 (NationPress) Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande sent a letter to Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik on Monday, outlining a series of demands aimed at improving women's safety in public transportation.
This initiative follows the alarming Pune bus rape case, which has ignited significant public outrage regarding security failures within the state's transport system.
A 26-year-old woman was assaulted inside a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus at the Swargate depot in Pune last week, leading to widespread anger. The suspect, Dattatray Gade, was arrested on Friday after evading capture for nearly a week.
In light of this incident, Kayande has called for prompt reforms to avert future crimes, asserting, "Following the Swargate incident, the public was enraged that such a heinous act could occur at a bus stand and in dilapidated buses."
"Our demand is unequivocal: every woman must feel safe. CCTV cameras should be installed on all state transport buses, security personnel must be stationed at every depot, and old buses should be retired," she stated in an interview with IANS.
She underscored the necessity of surveillance in crime deterrence, saying, "The installation of CCTV cameras will facilitate the apprehension of offenders with malicious intentions. This will assist in their arrest, prosecution, and rehabilitation. All these measures are vital for ensuring women's safety in public transport."
Kayande also addressed the molestation incident involving Union Minister of State Raksha Khadse's daughter, labeling it an "unfortunate" occurrence. Nonetheless, she affirmed that Maharashtra remains relatively secure for women.
"It is regrettable that such incidents occur. The Union Minister was present and promptly filed a complaint, resulting in rapid police action. Regardless of the accused, stringent measures will be enforced against them," she continued.
On a related note, Maharashtra Minister Shamburaj Desai denounced the molestation case, pledging that all suspects will be swiftly caught.
"The Chief Minister has issued firm directives to local police to take action. Minister Raksha Khadse's daughter is like our own, and any harassment against her is entirely intolerable. We vehemently oppose such actions," he told IANS.
He added that numerous suspects have already been apprehended, with police teams actively hunting for the remaining offenders. "Soon, all of them will be in custody," he asserted.
The Jalgaon police have thus far detained three individuals and apprehended a minor regarding the harassment and molestation of Minister Khadse's daughter.
The individuals taken into custody include Aniket Bhoyi, Kiran Mali, Anuj Patil, and one minor. Police have initiated cases against seven individuals and are continuing their search for additional suspects.
