London, Aug 11 (NationPress) Crystal Palace's goalkeeper, Dean Henderson, has raised concerns that the club's forced exit from the Europa League could undermine the integrity of the competition. This warning comes as they await the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s ruling on their appeal against UEFA's decision stemming from a multi-club ownership issue.
In July, the UEFA Club Financial Control Body relegated Palace to the third-tier Europa Conference League, citing that John Textor—the president of Eagle Football Group, which owns a majority stake in Olympique Lyonnais—also has a controlling interest in the London club.
Meanwhile, Ligue 1 team Lyon, which also qualified for the Europa League, has been allowed to take part. Crystal Palace has appealed to CAS, contesting UEFA's ruling that excludes them from the tournament. A confidential hearing took place on August 8, with a decision anticipated on Monday.
“We won the FA Cup, and we have a legitimate claim to be in the Europa League,” Henderson stated during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live after leading Palace to a FA Community Shield victory over Premier League champions Liverpool on Sunday. “For the sake of football, we deserve our place in the Europa League. It would, unfortunately, devalue the competition if we were not included.”
In June, Crystal Palace disclosed that Robert Wood “Woody” Johnson, co-owner of the New York Jets, had entered into a binding agreement to acquire Eagle Football Holding’s share in the club. However, the team did not meet the March deadline to comply with multi-club ownership regulations, even after winning the FA Cup in May, securing their entry into European competitions.
“I’m aware that the chairman, Steve Parish, has fought tirelessly against this decision, and I hope we will be reinstated in the Europa League where we rightfully belong. I trust that they will see reason and allow us back into the Europa League,” Henderson expressed.
