Lausanne, Aug 11 (NationPress) Just a day after Crystal Palace FC (CPFC) celebrated their triumph in the Community Shield against Liverpool, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has turned down the club's appeal against UEFA, Nottingham Forest FC, and Olympique Lyonnais (OL). This decision follows UEFA's removal of CPFC from the Europa League 2025/2026 due to violations of UEFA's multi-club ownership regulations.
Consequently, CPFC will now participate in the UEFA Conference League 2025/2026. The Eagles had gained qualification for this European tournament after clinching the 2024/25 FA Cup.
"The appeal aimed to overturn the decision made by the UEFA Club Financial Control Body on July 11, 2025, which determined that both CPFC and OL were not compliant with multi-club ownership regulations. In addition to the annulment request, CPFC sought readmission to the UEFA Europa League, which would reject Nottingham Forest or OL's admission," the CAS statement noted.
Upon reviewing the evidence, the Panel found that John Textor, founder of Eagle Football Holdings, owned shares in both CPFC and OL and held a Board position with significant influence over both clubs during UEFA’s evaluation.
The Panel reiterated that UEFA’s regulations are stringent and do not allow for flexibility for clubs deemed non-compliant at the time of assessment, contradicting CPFC's claims," the CAS statement read.
Palace celebrated their Community Shield win after triumphing in a penalty shootout. The Eagles showcased remarkable resilience, equalizing twice to finish the match 2-2. Dean Henderson, the hero of the shootout, expressed that his team rightfully deserves a spot in the Europa League based on their footballing achievements.
"As you can see today, we don’t dwell on it too much. Winning the FA Cup validates our place in the Europa League. For footballing reasons, we deserve to be there. It would diminish the competition if we weren’t included,” Henderson shared with BBC Radio 5 Live at Wembley.
