Shimla, May 20 (NationPress) A group of apple growers, represented by the Sanyukt Kisan Manch, met with Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday. They presented a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advocating for a prohibition on apple imports from Turkey.
Manch convener Harish Chauhan informed the Governor that India imports apples from approximately 44 nations, with Turkey contributing nearly 1.29 lakh metric tons annually.
He highlighted that Turkey generates around Rs 800 to 1,000 crore through its apple exports to India.
Chauhan emphasized the importance of the apple sector in Himachal Pradesh, stating that the state produces between 6 and 10 lakh metric tons of apples each year, supporting three to four lakh families involved in this industry.
He argued that prohibiting Turkish apple imports would not only enhance the state's economy but also convey a powerful message against nations that endorse terrorism and have strong ties with Pakistan.
The Governor voiced his support for the growers' demands, assuring them that their memorandum would be sent to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi.
He noted that this issue directly affects the economic welfare of the state, asserting that the interests of farmers and orchardists must be safeguarded.
In the meantime, former State BJP President and MP Suresh Kashyap accused the Congress of politicizing the issue of Turkish apples.
"We remind the Congress that multiple delegations have approached the Central government, and a decision may soon be forthcoming. It appears the Congress is merely seeking credit," he stated.
Kashyap added that various delegations from Himachal Pradesh have presented five key demands to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, the foremost being an immediate ban on apple imports from Turkey.
He mentioned the second demand is to raise the minimum import price limit on apples from other nations.
The third demand focuses on strict quality control for imported apples to prevent diseases and viruses from entering India, he noted.
Kashyap reiterated that the Congress need not engage in political maneuvering regarding this matter, as the Central government is well-aware of the situation.
