Shimla, July 8 (NationPress) A group of apple growers approached Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu on Tuesday regarding a concerning disease that is swiftly spreading through apple orchards, resulting in serious crop damage that impacts the state’s economy by over Rs 5,000 crore.
The growers urged the Chief Minister to act quickly to investigate and manage this troubling issue. They reported that the disease is causing apple leaves to turn yellow and fall prematurely, significantly reducing yields.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the Chief Minister contacted Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry Vice-Chancellor to order a team of experts to be dispatched to the affected regions immediately.
He emphasized the need for a scientific investigation of the disease and directed that orchardists receive proper education on prevention and control measures.
An official statement from Sukhu indicated that the disease's rapid spread is leading to substantial financial losses for the growers, highlighting the need for prompt action.
He instructed the Vice Chancellor to provide a comprehensive report to the government within a week to facilitate timely intervention.
Assuring the delegation of his commitment to addressing farmers' and fruit growers' issues as a top priority, he stated that the government would offer all necessary support.
He noted that apple farming is crucial to the state’s economy, with thousands of families relying on this sector for their livelihoods.
Last year, Himachal Pradesh experienced a 6.39 percent drop in apple production compared to the previous year.
In 2023, roughly 3.84 lakh metric tonnes of apples were procured, while in 2024, the figure was 3.61 LMT. Although early varieties have reached the markets, the apple season is expected to gain momentum after July 15.
Officials predict an encouraging output of 3.66 crore apple boxes this year, based on preliminary estimates from May.
