Is Himachal Tourism Facing An Economic Setback Due to Vehicle Entry Tax Hike?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shimla, Feb 20 (NationPress) The primary opposition party, BJP, criticized the financially strained state Congress administration in Himachal Pradesh for the significant rise in the vehicle entry fee and the introduction of a FASTag-based collection system aimed at enhancing state revenues, effective from April 1. The party's media coordinator, Karan Nanda, stated that this decision represents a direct economic setback to the state's economy, tourism, and its residents. The entry fee for private vehicles from neighboring states is increasing from Rs 70 to Rs 130, while small cargo vehicles will face a fee of up to Rs 170, indicating that the government is adopting a strategy to impose financial strains on the public for revenue enhancement.
No toll will be charged for vehicles leaving the state. The toll must be settled at the first entry point, and the receipt will remain valid for 24 hours across the state.
Regular travelers can benefit from discounted quarterly and annual tokens available at the entry points.
Nanda pointed out that the substantial tax hike on larger freight vehicles, construction machinery, minibuses, and commercial vehicles will lead to increased goods pricing, ultimately burdening the average consumer with inflation. He accused the government of extracting vast amounts from the public while showing minimal development progress.
Increasing entry fees in a state reliant on tourism is akin to self-sabotage.
He mentioned that the government promotes the idea of a self-sufficient Himachal but is implementing policies that hinder industry, tourism, and transport. The government's revenue goal of Rs 185 crore from 55 toll barriers illustrates that their focus is not on public convenience but rather on maximizing revenue collection.
Nanda cautioned that if this anti-people measure is not revoked, it will severely affect the state's economy, tourist numbers, and job opportunities.
From April 1, buses and trucks (up to two axles) will incur a fee of Rs 570, commercial vehicles (three axles) Rs 600, heavy construction machinery or earth-moving equipment or multi-axle vehicles Rs 800, and oversized vehicles Rs 900.
