Kolkata, Aug 18 (NationPress) - Hindol Majumdar, an alumnus of Jadavpur University, has been granted bail by the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Alipore, Kolkata, after being implicated in the attack on the car of state Education Minister Bratya Basu earlier this year.
On Monday, Hindol was presented in court following the expiration of his police custody. His attorney, Gopal Haldar, advocated for his release, highlighting the lack of new developments in the case.
During the proceedings, it was noted that Hindol resides in Spain for research purposes, and was not in Kolkata at the time of the incident. He was apprehended upon returning to India to visit his parents. Despite his lawyer's arguments, the public prosecutor opposed the bail request.
On March 1, allegations of harassment against the Education Minister and vandalism of his vehicle surfaced at Jadavpur University, implicating Hindol in the incident.
Hindol was arrested last Wednesday after arriving at Delhi airport from Spain, facing accusations of inciting the attack remotely, approximately 8,500 kilometers away.
The police alleged that he orchestrated the attack via WhatsApp, communicating with students from Jadavpur University.
A police official claimed, 'He developed the plan for the assault through WhatsApp with Jadavpur University students.'
In court, police maintained that Hindol messaged former students indicating he would spearhead the attack. The government prosecutor referenced this in the case diary. Hindol's lawyer countered, emphasizing his client's commendable educational background and the fact that he was not physically present during the event.
After listening to both sides, the judge approved Hindol's bail with a bond of Rs 1,000.
His legal counsel requested that no stringent conditions be imposed that might hinder the researcher's academic pursuits, and the judge assured this would be considered.
Hindol graduated with a B-Tech in Pharmacy from Jadavpur University and is currently conducting research in Spain. He returned to India on Wednesday and was detained at the Delhi airport due to an issued lookout notice.
Consequently, the Immigration Department halted him, leading to his custody by Delhi Police. Subsequently, the Kolkata Police were informed, and a team from Kolkata, directed by the investigating officer from Jadavpur Police Station, brought him back to Kolkata under transit remand.
