Kolkata, March 6 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police has taken action by filing FIRs against West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu, his vehicle's driver, and Trinamool Congress leader Om Prakash Mishra in relation to the chaotic events that unfolded on March 1 at Jadavpur University (JU). This incident resulted in two students suffering serious injuries and requiring hospitalization after being 'allegedly and deliberately' struck by the minister's vehicle.
The FIRs were filed just one day following a directive from a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, which instructed the Kolkata Police to register FIRs based on the complaints from the protesting students rather than solely responding to grievances from the Trinamool Congress-affiliated West Bengal College & University Professors’ Association (WBCUPA).
The accused are facing multiple charges, including physical assault and making threats, among others.
Amit Roy, the father of the injured students, expressed his satisfaction with the police's actions, stating that the role of the police in a democratic nation is to uphold democratic principles.
“Failure to do so is contrary to democratic practices. The directive from the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, which mandated the police to file FIRs based on the students' complaints, exemplifies why the public trusts the judiciary,” Amit Roy remarked.
On Thursday, in addition to ordering the registration of FIRs from the students' complaints, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh also instructed the state government to prepare a comprehensive report on the situation.
The turmoil at the university occurred on Saturday when the minister's car was reportedly halted upon entering the campus, leading to a confrontation. The students were advocating for immediate elections for the university’s student council.
During the protests, it was alleged that as Basu attempted to depart amidst the unrest, his vehicle struck two protesting students, severely injuring them and necessitating hospitalization.
While this was happening, the minister sustained minor injuries and became unwell. He was transported to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital and was discharged shortly afterward.
