Kolkata, March 5 (NationPress) The students at the renowned Jadavpur University in Kolkata are set to reveal their next steps regarding protests after the March 1 incident where two students were reportedly struck and injured by a Minister's vehicle. This announcement will take place after 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
The students are firm in their demands. The primary request is for an FIR to be lodged against Minister Bartya Basu regarding the alleged intentional injury caused to the two students by his car. Their second demand is for the acting vice-chancellor, Bhaskar Gupta, to swiftly organize a meeting with various student unions to address the ongoing issues at the university.
The students argue that the investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police was one-sided and favored the authorities, as all seven FIRs filed pertained solely to the students, with none regarding the injuries sustained by the two hospitalized students.
Additionally, they insist that all charges against the students be dismissed immediately and that the university should cover the medical costs for those injured.
The students have given the acting vice-chancellor a deadline until 4 p.m. on Wednesday to provide concrete feedback on this matter, after which they will disclose their next course of action.
The call for filing an FIR against Basu was discussed during a meeting between him and various college and university educators on Tuesday. Nonetheless, the representatives from the West Bengal College & University Professors’ Association (WBCUPA) opposed this suggestion.
The disturbance began on Saturday when the Minister's car was reportedly stopped upon entering the campus, leading to a confrontation. The students were advocating for immediate elections for the university’s student council.
The protesting students claimed that as Basu attempted to exit amidst the demonstrations, his vehicle intentionally struck two of them, resulting in serious injuries that required hospitalization. During the protests, the Minister also sustained minor injuries and fell ill, necessitating his admission to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital, from which he was later discharged.
