Kolkata, March 5 (NationPress) In the midst of the student unrest at Kolkata's famed Jadavpur University, acting vice-chancellor Bhaskar Gupta was admitted to a private hospital on Wednesday. Feeling unwell, the medical team observed fluctuations in his blood pressure levels.
His hospitalization coincided with the students' ultimatum of 4 p.m. for the university to address their demands concerning the incident that occurred on March 1. The students have stated that they will reveal their subsequent actions based on the university's response.
On March 1, two students reportedly sustained injuries after being struck by a Minister’s car.
According to Gupta’s family relayed to the media, he required hospitalization as his blood pressure could not be stabilized with home medication.
After the disturbances on March 1, Gupta was advised by doctors to rest completely. Reports indicated that on Wednesday morning, his blood pressure spiked, prompting his doctor to decide on immediate hospitalization to avoid further complications.
The primary demands from the protesting students include filing an FIR against West Bengal Education Minister Bartya Basu regarding the alleged incident involving the two students and that the acting vice-chancellor should promptly convene a meeting with various student unions to deliberate on the ongoing crisis.
The unrest began on Saturday when the Minister's vehicle was reportedly stopped upon entering the campus, leading to a scuffle. The students are insisting on the immediate conduct of elections for the university’s student council.
The protesting students assert that as Basu attempted to exit the campus amidst the protests, his vehicle intentionally struck the two students, resulting in severe injuries that necessitated hospitalization. During the protests, the Minister sustained minor injuries and fell ill, being taken to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital, from which he was later discharged.
