BRICS Cycling event: Mandaviya champions Fit India Movement in Visakhapatnam
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Minister Mansukh L. Mandaviya used the platform of the BRICS Friendship Sunday on Cycling event in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on 23 August to spotlight the expanding reach of the Fit India Movement, calling cycling a solution to both poor health and environmental pollution. The event was held alongside the BRICS Sports Ministers' Meeting, which brought together Sports Ministers and Heads of Delegation from all 11 BRICS member nations.
What Mandaviya Said
Addressing participants at the cycling event, Mandaviya underscored the grassroots scale of the initiative. 'Today in Visakhapatnam, on the occasion of the BRICS Summit, the BRICS Friendship Sunday on Cycling event was organised. The Fit India Movement, led by our Prime Minister, is moving forward. Today, young people across more than 18,000 locations in the country are spreading the message of fitness through Sunday on Cycling,' he said.
The minister also framed cycling as a multi-dimensional solution: 'Cycling is one of the best forms of exercise. It is also a solution to pollution and helps save fuel. We should all stay fit to build a Viksit Bharat. If every individual is fit, society as a whole will be fit,' he added.
BRICS Sports Ministers' Meeting: Key Agenda
The Sports Ministers' Meeting in Visakhapatnam is a central pillar of India's BRICS Chairship 2026, which is guided by the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'. Delegations from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates participated.
According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Sports Track under India's BRICS Chairship has focused on traditional and indigenous sports, sports technology, sports manufacturing, and the finalisation of a Joint Declaration. The meeting was expected to conclude with the adoption of the BRICS Sports Joint Declaration and the BRICS Youth Cooperation Framework.
Fit India Movement: Nationwide Momentum
Simultaneously, in New Delhi, the Sunday on Cycle event was flagged off at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, reinforcing the nationwide character of the initiative. Former Indian Handball team captain and coach Naveen Punia participated and reflected on the movement's significance: 'It's a matter of great pride... We have been connected with fitness from the very beginning, but today, it is great to see such a movement taking place across the country... We can certainly take some time out for fitness for at least one day.'
Broader Significance
The convergence of the BRICS sporting agenda with India's domestic fitness push is notable. By hosting the cycling event alongside a multilateral sports ministers' meeting, India is projecting its public health priorities onto an international stage. This comes amid a broader government push to embed fitness culture into everyday life, with the Fit India Movement now operating at scale across tens of thousands of locations. How this multilateral momentum translates into concrete cooperation frameworks remains to be seen as the Joint Declaration is adopted.
