Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dehradun, Feb 15 (NationPress) From the bustling capital to the serene vistas of Dehradun and nearly every district throughout the nation, fitness aficionados actively took part in the 61st edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle (SOC) at nearly 1000 locations. The FIT India Movement was inaugurated on August 29, 2019, by our Honourable Prime Minister to integrate fitness as an essential component of everyday life. Its mission is to foster behavioral shifts and advocate for a more active lifestyle.
Last year, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya launched Fit India Sundays on Cycle to champion cycling as a fitness pursuit and tackle pressing issues such as obesity and pollution.
Over the past year, this initiative has extended to the most remote corners of the country, evolving into a People's Movement spearheaded by the public, with the Fit India Mission from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports acting as a driving force. This week was no exception, as thousands took to the streets to cycle nationwide.
In Delhi, the widely attended Sunday event was moved from the city center to Najafgarh, the birthplace of the iconic cricketer Virender Sehwag, to widen participation and engage more fitness lovers. In Najafgarh, the atmosphere was electric as locals gathered early to partake in a unique community fitness initiative.
As 55-year-old Ratan Mittal signed up for his cycle, he expressed, "Initiatives like these inspire individuals of all ages to come together. This is not merely a fitness movement; it's a community unifying exercise. My son joined me, and I can't recall the last time we cycled together. This is a remarkable experience."
Among the motivators were Arjuna Award-winning kabaddi player Shakshi Punia, MMA fighter and Fit India Champion Pawan Mann, Fit India Champion Timsy Bector, and Fit India Ambassador Shivam Gahlot. Bector, a regular at SOCs, remarked that relocating the event outside central Delhi is a fantastic strategy to raise awareness about the significance of fitness.
Shakshi Punia commented, "We are thrilled to be here. I didn't anticipate such strong interest from the public in a fitness event. Fitness is indeed a crucial aspect of our lives; when we engage as a community, we motivate one another, making it more enjoyable."
Pawan Mann stated, "I believe SOC is the largest community fitness movement globally occurring every Sunday. I express my gratitude to our Honourable Prime Minister for visualizing the Fit India Movement and to our Union Sports Minister for conceptualizing SOC as a nationwide initiative."
Meanwhile, the principal event of the 61st SOC took place in Dehradun. Nestled among the fog-covered hills and the winter sun of Uttarakhand, the city hosted a vibrant celebration of fitness, culture, and community spirit at the historic Parade Ground on Sunday morning. Over 1000 cyclists embarked against the misty hills, towering sal trees, and crisp mountain air; the Parade Ground in Doon Valley transformed into a dynamic center of movement, music, and enthusiasm, offering the city a grand event that fused natural beauty with a strong message of healthy living.
The event attracted a varied group of participants, ranging from seasoned cyclists to novices, including school students and seniors. As bikes traversed picturesque, tree-lined routes, participants paused to take in the stunning scenery that enhances Dehradun’s reputation as one of India’s most beautiful cities. "I cycle frequently, but today’s ride was exceptional. The weather, the crowd, and the lively ambiance made it feel like a festival celebrating fitness," shared Ankit Rawat, a local IT professional, shortly after completing the rally.
Distinguished dignitaries attended the event in Dehradun on Sunday, February 15, including Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the Hon’ble former Governor of Maharashtra and Former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, alongside Khajan Das, the Hon'ble Vidayak. Senior officials from the Sports Authority of India and the state administration were also present, underscoring strong institutional support for the movement.
Emerging talent in Indian boxing, Nupur Sheoran, former women’s hockey goalkeeper and coach Yogita Bali, national triple jump champion Niharika Vashisht, and skilled fencer Rishika Khajuria added sporting prominence by interacting with participants and highlighting that fitness is a lifelong commitment. Also present was Indian mountaineer Tashi Malik, a Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award recipient, who stressed the importance of endurance and discipline.
Olympian race walker Manish Singh Rawat, a proud representative of Uttarakhand, joined the celebrations alongside Arjuna Award-winning basketball legend Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, whose nearly two-decade-long career continues to inspire young athletes nationwide.
The presence of Fit India influencers and community role models provided additional motivation. The event showcased various pathways to health and resilience, featuring endurance enthusiasts like Tara and Sushila from ‘Two Fit To Quit’, alongside fitness advocates such as Shanky Singh, Pratibha Thapliyal, Damini Chopra, and Vikram Jadav.
Shri Koshiyari, aged 83, underscored the necessity for youth to uphold fitness. "Regardless of whether you're an athlete, you should embody a sportsman spirit. We must always uphold this attitude. It should be evident in all domains," he stated. Referring to the fitness mantra from Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, he added, “Our Hon'ble PM works 20 hours a day himself. It illustrates that with determination and fitness, maintaining health is entirely feasible. We aspire for every youth to stay fit. Let’s utilize all seven days for cycling.”
Colleges and universities were special partners for this edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle. Nupur Sheoran, a multiple-time gold medallist at the World Boxing Cup and a silver medallist at the World Championships, expressed, "I was not expecting such a large turnout this morning, and it is truly remarkable. I felt nostalgic, cycling along with the group. It was an exhilarating ride!"
Beyond cycling, the Parade Ground was alive with activity as different zones simultaneously came to life. Participants began with yoga sessions led by Yogasana Bharat, followed by energetic Zumba workouts that kept the excitement alive even for non-cyclists. Activities like rope skipping, Mallakhamb demonstrations, tug of war, Kūdō martial arts showcases, and interactive game zones made fitness accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for individuals of all ages.
As the rally concluded at the Parade Ground, the smiles, selfies, and shared stories illustrated the profound impact of the initiative. The Dehradun edition once again showcased how Fit India Sundays on Cycle has transcended a simple weekly event—it has transformed into a people’s movement that advocates health, community spirit, and the joy of movement.
