Ahmedabad, April 9 (NationPress) The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to set up a new campus in Dubai.
The official agreement was signed by Professor Bharat Bhasker, the Director of IIMA, and His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, the Director General of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism.
The signing ceremony was attended by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, who also serves as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE; along with Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry.
During the event, Professor Bhasker emphasized the importance of this collaboration: “The IIMA Dubai campus marks a significant step towards our aim of becoming a globally recognized management institution. With Dubai’s vibrant business landscape and exceptional infrastructure, we are committed to developing leaders who can excel in intricate global markets.”
The IIMA Dubai campus will be situated within the Dubai International Academic City (DIAC), a prominent regional center for higher education that fosters a diverse multicultural student body and outstanding facilities.
This initiative signifies IIMA’s inaugural international venture and underscores India’s expanding educational presence on the global stage.
The initial program to be offered at the Dubai campus will be a full-time One-year MBA, tailored specifically for global working professionals and entrepreneurs.
Structured over five academic terms, the program guarantees rigorous academic training, skill development, and international exposure.
This initiative seeks to meet the rising demand for executive-level education in the Middle East and nearby regions. India currently boasts 21 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), spread across various states, which form a strong network of elite public business schools providing postgraduate, doctoral, and executive management programs.
These institutions were established by the Central government with the objective of cultivating world-class leaders and managers through top-notch education, research, and training.
The oldest and most prestigious IIMs, often regarded as the first generation, include IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta, and IIM Bangalore, founded in the 1960s and 1970s. These are acknowledged as the “top three” in the IIM ecosystem and have global recognition.
IIM Lucknow, established in 1984, followed by IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore in 1996, represent the second tier of the older IIMs. These institutes have developed robust reputations in areas such as HR, operations, entrepreneurship, and finance.
Noteworthy is IIM Indore’s introduction of the five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM), which merges undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
During the 2008–2011 period, the government launched several second-generation IIMs to enhance access to management education. These include IIM Shillong, IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, IIM Raipur, IIM Tiruchirappalli, IIM Udaipur, and IIM Kashipur.
Each of these institutions has established its own unique identity—for example, IIM Shillong is recognized for its commitment to sustainability, while IIM Udaipur is noted for its focus on global exposure and academic excellence.
