IMD Predicts Rainfall in Tamil Nadu; Sudden Showers Provide Heat Relief
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 5 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms in various areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for the upcoming days. Isolated heavy showers are expected in the hilly regions, including districts like Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, and Theni.
The IMD attributes this weather pattern to a low-pressure system stretching from Marathwada through interior Karnataka down to southern Tamil Nadu. While the northern regions might experience a gradual temperature increase of about 2-3 degrees Celsius in the following days, southern districts are likely to enjoy comparatively stable weather with sporadic rainfall.
As this forecast unfolds, several districts received unexpected rain on Saturday, providing a much-needed respite from the intense summer heat. In Kodaikanal, moderate rainfall lasting around an hour was observed in locations such as Observatory, Eerichalai, Anna Salai, and Moonjikkal. However, a large tree fell in the Pulicholai area, causing temporary traffic disruption.
Ooty also experienced widespread rainfall across the Botanical Gardens, Charing Cross, ATC, and market places, much to the delight of tourists who had been facing unusually high temperatures at the onset of the tourist season.
Interior regions recorded significant precipitation as well. In Dindigul district, areas like Natham, Chanarpatti, Gopalpatti, Anjukulipatti, Thavasimadai, Chinnalapatti, and Athoor received consistent showers. In Vellore, where temperatures had recently soared above 37 degrees Celsius, rain in Sathuvachari, Katpadi, Vallimalai, and Ponnai brought relief to the local populace.
Tourists in Yercaud were surprised by sudden rain while enjoying boating and other activities. Rainfall was also reported in Salem and nearby regions, including Asthampatti, Ammapet, and Kondalampatti.
Heavy downpours were recorded in parts of the Perambalur district, where strong winds uprooted banana trees in Echampatti.
Additionally, Kovilpatti and surrounding areas received rain, which helped cool down the prolonged heat.
Despite the rainfall, temperatures across the state remained elevated. Madurai recorded 38 degrees Celsius, while Tiruchirappalli and Thoothukudi reached 39 degrees. Chennai can expect partly cloudy skies with temperatures fluctuating between 26 degrees and 37 degrees Celsius. No warnings have been issued for fishermen.
