Intermittent Rain and Thunderstorms Expected in Tamil Nadu for the Next Six Days
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 18 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a series of intermittent showers across various regions in Tamil Nadu over the upcoming six days, providing much-needed relief from the escalating summer temperatures.
As per the weather bureau, certain areas in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms on March 18. The existing low-pressure trough near the Tamil Nadu coast is anticipated to affect weather trends, especially in the delta and nearby districts in the days ahead.
On March 19, isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall are expected in one or two locations within the delta districts and the Karaikal region, while the majority of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will likely remain dry.
A comparable weather pattern is anticipated for March 20, with scattered light showers expected in southern Tamil Nadu, the delta areas, and Karaikal. By March 21, the rainfall is projected to shift towards the Western Ghats and southern Tamil Nadu, where isolated light showers with thunderstorms may occur.
Coastal districts in the southern region might also see brief rain spells, while the rest of the state and Puducherry are likely to remain dry. On March 23, light rain is forecasted at specific locations along the southern coastal districts, with dry weather prevailing elsewhere.
Recently, unexpected rainfalls across various districts have provided substantial relief from the soaring temperatures. In Virudhunagar district, areas such as Sivakasi, Thiruthangal, Sattur, Periyapatti, Chithurajapuram, and Meenampatti experienced intense thunderstorms lasting over an hour.
Hailstorms were recorded in parts of the Nilgiris, including Ooty and nearby regions, capturing the attention of both residents and tourists.
Similar weather conditions were noted in Kalasapakkam and Pudukovil areas of Tirupattur district, as well as in Vaniyambadi, Ambur, and the Yelagiri hills, where significant rainfall was registered. In Kodaikanal, hailstones surprised visitors in Poolathur village, while dense fog following the rains created visibility challenges for drivers.
Madurai witnessed heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning for over an hour, providing a significant cooling effect in the area. Coimbatore, which had been suffering under extreme heat, also experienced widespread showers in locations like Race Course, Gandhipuram, Ukkadam, Perur, Madampatti, and Kaalampalayam.
Rainfall was also reported in parts of Thoothukudi and Theni districts, including Kovilpatti, Ettayapuram, Periyakulam, and areas near the Sothuparai dam and Kumbakkarai Falls.
Meanwhile, neighboring Karnataka’s Dharwad district experienced sudden hailstorms, resulting in roads covered in ice-like deposits, contributing to the unusual weather patterns across southern India.
