Chennai, Sep 30 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has announced the impending formation of a new low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday, indicating that the rainfall is set to persist across Tamil Nadu and other southern states in the days ahead.
As per RMC officials, an atmospheric circulation is currently present over the northern regions of the Andaman Sea. This circulation is expected to lead to the development of a new low-pressure area over the central Bay of Bengal and the adjacent north Andaman Sea on October 2. This system may gain strength and impact weather conditions across South India.
The weather bureau stated that widespread atmospheric circulation continues over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, causing scattered rainfall along with thunder and gusty winds in various locations.
Moderate downpours with sporadic lightning are anticipated in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Tuesday and Wednesday. The forecast suggests that moderate rainfall could persist in isolated areas of the state until October 5.
In the last 24 hours up to Tuesday morning, the Nilgiris district experienced the most rainfall, with the Bandalur taluk area recording 4 cm. Avalanche and Cherumuli in Nilgiris, Yercaud in Salem, and Mullanginavilai in Kanyakumari district each noted 3 cm of rainfall.
Officials stated that this consistent rain has assisted in preserving soil moisture in hilly areas but also advised caution in regions susceptible to landslides.
The RMC has cautioned fishermen and coastal communities to stay vigilant due to the expected squally weather over the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea in the upcoming days.
Wind speeds could increase along Tamil Nadu’s coast and in nearby waters as the low-pressure area develops. Meteorologists further mentioned that while the exact trajectory and intensity of the system will become clearer in the next 24-48 hours, its formation may bring additional rain to northern coastal Tamil Nadu and the interior districts.
Authorities are monitoring the situation for any localized flooding and have urged district administrations to be prepared.
The rainfall forecast coincides with the northeast monsoon season expected to intensify later in October, with the emerging system seen as an early indicator of active weather over the Bay of Bengal.
