Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Lucknow, February 25 (NationPress) - A search operation by the Income Tax Department is currently taking place at the residence of Uma Shankar Singh, the sole Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator in Uttar Pradesh.
Early this morning, over three dozen officials arrived at his home, supported by a significant police presence.
Their presence has escalated activity in the vicinity, as the examination of documents within the premises has sparked political reactions.
Sources indicate that the Income Tax team arrived around 7 a.m., promptly sealing off the area to restrict access. A unit of approximately 30 officials, aided by local police, is scrutinizing documents related to financial transactions and property issues.
As of now, the department has not released an official statement regarding the ongoing operation.
During the search, officials are reviewing files, electronic devices, and other records discovered at the location.
The operation is anticipated to last several hours. Security personnel are positioned outside the residence, and media access has been limited.
Uma Shankar Singh, who represents Rasra in Ballia district, is reportedly facing health challenges due to cancer, raising concerns among his supporters amidst these developments.
The investigation is proceeding with the presence of his family and close associates.
Singh was elected in 2022 and holds the distinction of being the only BSP MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
In response to the situation, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Dinesh Pratap Singh criticized the actions in a post on X.
It is noteworthy that Singh's niece, Kanika Singh, is married to his son, Yukesh Singh.
“The politicians in the country and state, along with all institutions, including the Income Tax Department, know that Shri Uma Shankar Singh has been fighting for his life for over two years,” Dinesh Pratap Singh stated.
“Given his current condition, Shri Uma Shankar Singh ji is unable to generate income; all his time and resources are dedicated solely to preserving his life. His businesses have largely come to a halt, and he is living in seclusion at home,” he added.
The Minister further emphasized that the BSP MLA cannot even participate in the Legislative Assembly sessions due to his health.
“At this moment, not even a nurse or doctor is allowed to visit his home. Should any harm come to him, these unfeeling institutions will be held accountable. In such circumstances, even for the rarest of crimes, honorable courts accept pleas on humanitarian grounds and grant acquittals,” he continued.
Dinesh Pratap Singh questioned, “Which callous politician or institution would dare to inflict more suffering in such dire times?”
“May wisdom prevail among such individuals and organizations,” he concluded.
As the raid progresses, more details are expected to emerge.
