Key Takeaways
Davos, Jan 20 (NationPress) European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday that the European Union (EU) is poised to conclude a landmark free trade agreement (FTA) with India.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF), she characterized the impending trade deal as groundbreaking.
“There are still tasks to complete. However, we are on the brink of this significant trade agreement,” she shared with attendees, mentioning that the pact could potentially establish a market comprising almost two billion individuals.
Von der Leyen plans to visit India early next week and will serve as the chief guest at the Republic Day Parade on January 26.
She emphasized that the EU has acted promptly in recent years concerning energy security and access to essential raw materials.
According to her, the EU must accelerate efforts to bolster its economic and strategic resilience.
“Geopolitical challenges can - and should - present opportunities for Europe. The profound transformation underway makes it both feasible and essential to forge a new sense of European independence. From security to the economy, and from defense to democracy, Europe is gaining momentum,” she remarked.
India and the EU are nearing the conclusion of a groundbreaking FTA set for January 27, the day after the Republic Day festivities, which will be attended by senior EU officials as chief guests. A document will be released by both parties to announce the finalization of FTA negotiations, following which the agreement will undergo the necessary legal procedures and ratification by the European Parliament and Council.
Both parties are also expected to sign a security and defense partnership agreement, along with a pact aimed at facilitating the mobility of Indian professionals seeking employment in the EU.
European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President von der Leyen will be the distinguished guests at India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations before jointly co-chairing the summit. A military contingent from the EU will participate in the Republic Day parade for the first time, symbolizing the strengthening bilateral strategic partnership.
This trade agreement will be the largest India has ever signed, encompassing goods and services with the 27-nation European Union, which stands as one of India’s primary export markets.
