Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal informed reporters that both India and EU negotiators are nearing the completion of the trade agreement, with efforts underway to resolve remaining details ahead of the leadership meeting planned for January 27, following the Republic Day celebrations.
Agrawal noted that 20 out of 24 chapters of the India-EU FTA have been finalized, and discussions continue on the few outstanding issues.
European Council President Antonio Luis Santos da Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit India from January 25 to 27. They will also participate in the 77th Republic Day festivities on January 26, leading into the India-EU Summit the following day.
During a recent visit to India, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested that the India-EU trade pact could be signed by the end of January.
Merz expressed Germany's strong support for the free trade agreement, advocating for the expedited signing to address supply chain disruptions experienced over the past year.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently highlighted the trade negotiations with the EU in Brussels as a significant focus for his Ministry. He described the discussions with EU Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Maros Sefcovic as productive, covering essential aspects of the proposed India-EU FTA. Goyal underscored the importance of concluding a fair, balanced, and ambitious agreement that aligns with shared values and economic priorities.
Additionally, Goyal mentioned his visit to Liechtenstein to assess the implementation of the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement with top political leaders.
