On Sunday, Costa and Von der Leyen were given a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour upon their arrival.
Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada welcomed Costa at the airport as he commenced his state visit.
"India-EU: A partnership of trust and reliability. A warm welcome to President Antonio Costa as he arrives in New Delhi for a State Visit to India, welcomed by Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada," stated Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X.
Both leaders were honored with a ceremonial welcome. Costa noted his "honor" to arrive in New Delhi for the 16th EU-India Summit just before India’s Republic Day.
He posted, "Honored to arrive in New Delhi for the 16th EU-India Summit on the eve of India’s 77th Republic Day. Celebrating a robust and evolving EU-India partnership—from trade and security to clean transition and vibrant people-to-people connections."
Von der Leyen arrived on Saturday and was welcomed by Minister Prasada upon her arrival.
According to a statement from the European Council, Costa and Von der Leyen will represent the EU at the summit in New Delhi on January 27, hosted by Prime Minister Modi. Costa emphasized: "India is a vital partner for the EU. Together, we hold the capacity and responsibility to uphold the rules-based international order."
The summit is expected to enhance the EU-India strategic partnership and improve collaboration in critical policy areas such as trade, security, clean transitions, and people-to-people cooperation.
During the summit, leaders will likely adopt a comprehensive strategic agenda aimed at increasing cooperation in four sectors: prosperity and sustainability, technology and innovation, security and defense, plus connectivity and global issues.
Additionally, discussions will cover trade regarding the ongoing free trade agreement negotiations initiated in 2007. The summits will focus on tighter collaboration between the EU and India on security and defense, alongside regional and global topics, particularly regarding a robust multilateral system, a free Indo-Pacific, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
