"This visit will catalyze our ongoing engagement and collaboration across various sectors between India and Europe," he noted.
President Droupadi Murmu officiated the Republic Day celebrations by hoisting the national flag, leading the nation in honoring this historic occasion. The National Flag was raised in conjunction with the National Anthem, followed by a grand 21-gun salute executed with indigenous 105-mm Light Field Guns.
Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen attended the momentous celebrations as Chief Guests and, adhering to tradition, were escorted to Kartavya Path by the President's Bodyguard, the oldest regiment of the Indian Army. In a revival of a tradition that had been dormant for 40 years, they arrived in a Traditional Buggy, adding a regal flair to the day’s festivities.
Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen are set to represent the EU at the 16th EU-India summit hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on January 27.
The European Council commented: "The summit will provide a platform to enhance the EU-India strategic partnership and strengthen collaboration in key policy areas such as trade, security and defense, clean transition, and people-to-people cooperation."
During the summit, leaders are anticipated to endorse a joint EU-India comprehensive strategic agenda aimed at boosting strategic cooperation in four critical sectors, supported by enablers across pillars: prosperity and sustainability, technology and innovation, security and defense, and connectivity and global issues.
The two sides will also deliberate on trade amidst ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement initiated in 2007. Focus will also be placed on enhancing cooperation between the EU and India on security and defense matters. Discussions will encompass regional and global issues, particularly the necessity for an effective multilateral system, a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the situation in the Middle East.
