Yerevan, Feb 2 (NationPress) A prominent delegation from India’s defence sector, led by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, has landed in Armenia for an official four-day visit focused on enhancing defence and security collaboration between the two nations.
The Indian team arrived in Yerevan on Sunday, as per a release from the Integrated Defence Staff Headquarters.
This visit is perceived as a crucial milestone in elevating military cooperation and strengthening strategic partnerships.
“This visit signifies an important advancement in mutual strategic interests and aims to bolster long-term defence and security collaboration between both Nations,” stated the Integrated Defence Staff Headquarters.
Upon their arrival in the Armenian capital, the delegation was warmly welcomed by India’s Ambassador to Armenia, Nilakshi Saha Sinha, and the Deputy Chief of the Armenian Armed Forces, Major General Temur Shahnazaryan.
The cordial reception highlights the increasing closeness between New Delhi and Yerevan in the defence sector.
This visit follows a significant milestone in India-Armenia defence relations.
Just two weeks prior, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the commencement of the first shipment of guided Pinaka rockets to Armenia, manufactured by Pune-based Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL).
In September 2022, Armenia had signed a contract worth approximately Rs 2,000 crore for the acquisition of four Pinaka rocket system batteries.
The agreement includes unguided, extended-range, and guided variants of the system. Notably, Armenia has become the first international purchaser of the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
This agreement marks a pivotal moment in India’s broader ambition for Aatmanirbharta in defence manufacturing, as well as its goal to become a significant global defence exporter.
Deliveries of the initial unguided Pinaka rocket systems began in July 2023 and are expected to conclude by late 2024, paving the way for future shipments of advanced variants.
Earlier, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that the export of Pinaka missiles reflects the growing strength and maturity of India’s defence industry, indicating that the country is transitioning from being solely an importer to a notable exporter on the global stage.
