New Delhi, May 31 (NationPress) The area under exploration for oil and gas in India’s sedimentary basin has surged by 76 percent since 2014, according to Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Speaking at the CII annual business summit, the minister noted that the government has expanded the explored area from 6 percent to 10 percent over the past ten years, with aspirations to reach 15 percent soon.
“Our goal is to extend India's oil and gas exploration footprint to 1 million sq km by 2030,” he stated.
Puri highlighted that India’s rapidly growing energy economy is thriving under Prime Minister Modi's leadership.
He emphasized that energy security is now a strategic imperative for India amidst a volatile global energy landscape marked by geopolitical shifts, conflicts, and climate responsibilities.
“In 2024-25, India imported approximately 242.4 million tonnes of crude oil, spending $137 billion on these imports, while diversifying its sources from 27 to 40 countries,” Puri remarked.
India has effectively managed the trilemma of energy availability, affordability, and sustainability during challenging times. Despite soaring global fuel prices, India has seen a decline in prices, thanks to proactive measures introduced by PM Modi for the citizens' benefit.
Puri added that with essential reforms and a renewed focus on growth, India is on a fast track to enhance its energy infrastructure and implement innovative solutions to accelerate the green energy transition.
He also mentioned the remarkable progress of India’s ethanol blending initiative, stating, “We have raised ethanol blending in petrol from 1.53 percent in 2013-14 to about 20 percent in April 2025, as we look forward.”
