India Achieves Record Quarterly Deal Volumes in Q1 2026, Up 5% Sequentially: Report
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 13 (NationPress) In Q1 2026, India achieved its highest quarterly deal volumes ever, with a total of 686 transactions indicating a 5% increase in volumes, according to a report released on Monday.
However, the overall deal value decreased to $16 billion, representing a 48% decline as the number of significant deals diminished, with only two billion-dollar transactions totaling $4.1 billion compared to seven such deals worth $15 billion in Q4 2025, as stated in the report by Grant Thornton Bharat.
Additionally, there was a notable decrease in public market fundraising, with IPO and QIP issuances dropping 63% in volume and 78% in value.
“India’s deal-making landscape showed remarkable resilience in Q1 2026, with transaction volumes growing for the fourth consecutive quarter, despite global uncertainties,” commented Shanthi Vijetha, Partner at Grant Thornton Bharat.
While deal values have moderated due to the lack of large transactions and a sluggish capital market, the ongoing momentum—particularly in outbound M&A, private equity volumes, and the rise of new unicorns—demonstrates persistent confidence in India’s long-term growth narrative, according to Vijetha.
“Bolstered by robust domestic fundamentals and a conducive policy framework, India continues to attract strategic and financial investments, even as investors navigate current global challenges,” she added.
The M&A activity remained consistent in terms of volume, although values saw a reduction due to the absence of large strategic deals. In total, there were 271 M&A transactions worth $6.9 billion during the quarter. Domestic transactions remained the cornerstone of activity with 193 deals amounting to $2.7 billion, while outbound deals accounted for 56% of the total M&A value.
Private equity activity was also vigorous during the quarter, with investors continuing to invest in numerous mid-sized transactions, as highlighted in the report.
A total of 415 private equity deals worth $9.1 billion were documented in Q1 2026, with volumes increasing by 9% quarter-over-quarter, continuing the upward trend observed throughout the past year.
