Did IndiGo's Noncompliance with FDTL Norms Trigger a Nationwide Crisis?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, Dec 8 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu, stated on Monday that the recent nationwide turmoil caused by IndiGo’s extensive flight cancellations resulted from the airline’s neglect in adhering to the Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms as recommended by the Parliament Standing Committee.
He emphasized that FDTL regulations were established to enhance public safety by introducing international standards.
During a news conference, Chief Minister Naidu explained that the FDTL guidelines set clear limits on pilot working hours, mandatory rest intervals, and crew working conditions. “Pilots must not exceed specific duty hours and require sufficient rest; otherwise, it jeopardizes safety in operations,” he pointed out.
Naidu noted that IndiGo, as a low-cost airline, has not employed enough staff over the years. The enforcement of FDTL regulations compelled the airline to comply, resulting in the cancellation of 550 flights on December 4 and nearly 600 flights on December 5.
“This abrupt disruption has caused significant inconvenience for passengers due to IndiGo’s inadequate roster management. That was their major error,” Naidu remarked.
He mentioned that the Government of India has since provided temporary relief by relaxing certain FDTL conditions, with expectations of a return to normal operations soon. As IndiGo dominates the market, operating around 60-65% of domestic flights, the crisis is substantial.
Despite the situation, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president expressed confidence that the Central Government will resolve the issue promptly. He noted that the government has already mandated refunds for all affected passengers, and most refunds have been processed.
Chandrababu Naidu responded to the opposition, particularly the YSR Congress party, which demanded the resignation of Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. “He is accountable to Parliament and the Hon’ble Prime Minister,” he stated.
Naidu criticized opponents for politicizing a national crisis. “They want to sensationalize this issue and deflect attention from their own failures. This matter is entirely under the Centre’s jurisdiction. As Chief Minister, I do not interfere in the responsibilities of Central Ministers—that is the Prime Minister’s domain,” he asserted.
He reiterated that both the Central Government and the airline are currently undertaking corrective measures to stabilize operations.
