Is the Government Keeping a Close Eye on IndiGo's Flight Issues?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 5 (NationPress) The government is vigilantly observing IndiGo’s recovery efforts and passenger assistance strategies until complete stability is restored, as stated by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The ministry has expressed serious concerns regarding the recent operational disturbances and flight cancellations affecting IndiGo’s network.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu led a high-level review session with IndiGo’s top management, alongside the Secretary of Civil Aviation, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and senior officials from the ministry and the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
IndiGo provided statistics on cancellations, attributing the disruptions to difficulties in crew scheduling and the enforcement of the updated Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) rules, compounded by seasonal weather challenges.
“It was noted that the revised FDTL regulations were implemented gradually in accordance with court directives to improve fatigue management and enhance flight safety,” the ministry remarked.
Naidu conveyed his clear dissatisfaction concerning the handling of the situation by the airline, emphasizing that there was sufficient time to ensure a smooth transition to the new regulatory frameworks.
The minister further instructed IndiGo to promptly normalize operations and guarantee that there is no surge in airfares due to the ongoing issues. He also mandated that passengers be informed in advance of any potential cancellations and that all necessary amenities, including hotel accommodations if needed, are provided swiftly to reduce inconvenience.
Naidu additionally convened a meeting with senior AAI officials, directing all airport directors to continually monitor the situation on-site and offer comprehensive support to stranded passengers.
He has urged ministry officials to emphasize the importance of effective coordination among all parties involved—airports, ATC, and other airlines—to restore normalcy as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, IndiGo’s CEO Pieter Elbers has acknowledged that the airline is experiencing significant operational turbulence, stating that the immediate focus is to stabilize services and restore punctuality, although achieving this is quite challenging. In an internal communication to staff, Elbers recognized that IndiGo, the largest airline in India, has not met expectations for a satisfactory travel experience recently amidst widespread disruptions that have caused passenger frustration.
The airline has been grappling with a surge of cancellations and delays, with over 300 flights canceled on Thursday alone and many others experiencing delays throughout the day.
