In New Delhi, on December 4, IndiGo's CEO Pieter Elbers openly acknowledged the airline's significant operational difficulties. He stated that the top priority is to stabilize services and improve punctuality, although he emphasized that achieving this is "not an easy target".
In a message directed at employees, Elbers recognized that IndiGo, recognized as India's largest airline, has not met expectations for a satisfactory travel experience recently, amidst widespread disruptions that have caused frustration among passengers.
The airline has been grappling with a surge of cancellations and delays, with over 300 flights canceled just on Thursday, alongside many others being late throughout the day.
Elbers remarked, "These past few days have been challenging for many of IndiGo's customers and colleagues." He continued, "We serve nearly 380,000 customers daily and strive for each of them to have a positive experience. Unfortunately, we fell short of that commitment in recent days, for which we have offered our public apologies."
He attributed the crisis to a mix of operational issues that coincided, including minor technical glitches, schedule changes, bad weather, increased congestion in the aviation sector, and the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) regulations.
Elbers stated, "Given the scale and complexity of our network, these disruptions can escalate rapidly, necessitating interventions at various levels. A lot of work is currently underway to address this."
He reassured employees that the airline is allocating resources across teams to stabilize schedules and mitigate further delays, while also tackling the root causes of these issues.
