Indore, March 3 (NationPress) Following the tragic deaths of two sanitation workers due to toxic gas asphyxiation while they were cleaning a sewer chamber in Indore, the government of Madhya Pradesh has declared a compensation of Rs 30 lakh for each of their families.
On Tuesday, Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav announced that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has sanctioned this financial aid to the next of kin of both deceased workers.
“In light of the unfortunate incident near the Choithram Hospital entrance, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has approved a compensation of Rs 30 lakh for every victim’s family,” Bhargav stated in a post on X.
The incident took place outside the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Fruit and Vegetable Market, where the two sanitation workers from the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) were performing cleaning duties in a sewer chamber.
As per reports from the police, the accident occurred when a pipe linked to a sewer suction machine ruptured during the cleaning process. One worker lost consciousness after inhaling toxic gas, and another worker who tried to rescue him also fell victim to the fumes.
Authorities reported that both workers succumbed to asphyxiation due to the hazardous gases inside the sewer line. Their bodies were retrieved with help from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Deputy Commissioner of Police Shrikrishna Lalchandani disclosed to the media late on Monday that the deceased were identified as Karan Yadav and Ajay Dodi.
An eyewitness, Amit Rajak, claimed that the workers entered the sewer chamber without the necessary safety gear. He further alleged that police, municipal officials, and ambulances did not arrive at the scene for nearly two hours post-incident.
Local bystanders reportedly attempted to rescue the workers by pulling them from the chamber before emergency teams arrived.
