Guwahati, Oct 6 (NationPress) The pressure is intensifying on Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organiser of the North East India Festival, who remains in police custody due to his alleged connection to the tragic demise of the iconic Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
On Monday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax (IT) Department are set to initiate an investigation into suspected financial irregularities associated with Mahanta.
While addressing the media in Guwahati, Sarma stated that the state government is coordinating with both central agencies to ensure a thorough and unbiased investigation.
“I am optimistic that the ED and IT Department will examine the financial anomalies linked to Shyamkanu Mahanta. We are collaborating closely to ensure that those involved in Zubeen Garg’s death are held accountable,” he emphasized.
The Chief Minister also noted that Mahanta has a reputation for networking with prominent figures.
“His main activity appeared to be taking photographs with various personalities. If the images saved on his mobile phone were disclosed, they would feature politicians, journalists, and others. However, such photographs are irrelevant to the ongoing investigation. We also possess records of several individuals who traveled with him to Bangkok, yet these details are not pertinent to this case,” Sarma added.
Regarding the ongoing investigation, Sarma mentioned that Rup Kamal Kalita, an Assamese residing in Singapore, is expected to arrive in Guwahati on Tuesday to participate in the inquiry.
“We anticipate that others will follow soon. Some are still hesitant to return, but we are exerting pressure as their testimonies are crucial for concluding the investigation swiftly,” he stated.
The Chief Minister clarified that the Assam Police will not operate in Singapore, as they lack jurisdiction in a foreign nation.
“The Centre has already invoked the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) between India and Singapore. This means that the Singapore government will provide the results of its investigation regarding Zubeen Garg’s death to Indian authorities,” he explained.
Sources indicated that the CID has issued notices to eight Assamese NRIs in Singapore who were present on the yacht during the incident. Except for Kalita, none have responded thus far.
The state government may contemplate stringent actions, including cancelling passports, against those who refuse to assist with the investigation.
