Chandigarh, Oct 15 (NationPress) The relatives of Y. Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who tragically took his own life in Chandigarh last week, have now agreed to an autopsy, marking the ninth day since the incident occurred. The officer is scheduled to be cremated around 4 p.m. at the Chandigarh cremation ground, according to officials.
Authorities reported that Additional Director General of Police Puran Kumar shot himself using his service pistol, resulting in his immediate death. He left behind a nine-page “final note” which implicated 15 serving and former officers, casting a spotlight on the state's police leadership regarding issues of casteism and bias.
In a shocking twist, a Haryana Police assistant sub-inspector was later discovered deceased from a gunshot wound, accompanied by a purported suicide note that accused the deceased Puran Kumar of corruption.
Shortly after Haryana's Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur was placed on leave due to the surrounding controversy, Om Parkash Singh was assigned additional duties as Director General of Police on Tuesday. This action came after demands from Kumar's family for accountability against Kapur and other officials for allegedly harassing Puran Kumar.
For over a week, there has been a deadlock between Puran Kumar's wife, Amneet P. Kumar, a senior IAS officer, and the government regarding calls for the arrest of DGP Kapur and Narendra Bijarniya, the recently dismissed Rohtak Superintendent of Police.
Addressing the situation, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi described the matter as a sensitive tragedy. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to honor commitments made to the family and take action against the officers implicated in caste discrimination against Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, who died by suicide on October 7.
Following a visit to Puran Kumar's family, Gandhi stated, “This is a tragedy. He was an IPS officer. Although Haryana's CM promised justice, three days have passed without any action. Y. Puran Kumar leaves behind two daughters who are under tremendous stress due to this situation. It sends a damaging message to countless Dalits that no matter how talented or capable you are, you can be suppressed. My message as Leader of Opposition to the PM and Haryana CM is to fulfill their promises to these daughters, let the funeral proceed, and address the officers putting pressure on the family.”
Gandhi emphasized that the couple belongs to a Dalit background and highlighted that systematic discrimination has long been employed to undermine this officer's career and reputation.
Union Minister Chirag Paswan also met with the family and reassured them that their demands would be met and action would be taken promptly.
