Tehran, June 22 (NationPress) Just hours after the United States targeted Iranian nuclear installations early on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced his upcoming visit to Russia for "serious consultations", with a strong possibility of discussions with President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at a press conference in Istanbul, Iran's leading diplomat confirmed his trip to Moscow on Monday, according to a report from Mehr News.
Araqchi emphasized the need for serious dialogues with the Russian leadership following the recent series of attacks on Iran by both Israeli and US forces.
He highlighted that meeting with President Putin is a key aspect of his visit.
Before Araqchi's Moscow trip, Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali stated that Tehran and Moscow have consistently maintained high-level consultations on various regional and international matters.
In a post on his X account, Jalali remarked: "As Iran faces an unjust war waged by the most vicious governments in human history".
The Iranian diplomat disclosed that the top official will arrive in Moscow to engage in critical discussions with President Putin.
He reiterated that Iran and Russia have always upheld a standard of elevated consultations concerning regional and global developments.
It is anticipated that the ongoing discussions between Iran and Russia will be beneficial in stabilizing the current situation, Jalali stressed.
On Sunday, Russia issued a strong condemnation of the US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, labeling them as "irresponsible" actions that violate international law, especially coming from a permanent member of the UN Security Council, which could destabilize the region and significantly damage the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) framework.
"These actions have severely compromised the credibility of the NPT and the integrity of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) monitoring and verification mechanisms that support it," stated the Foreign Ministry.
"We call on the IAEA leadership to respond swiftly, professionally, and transparently, avoiding ambiguous language or attempts to obscure political biases. An unbiased and clear report from the Director General is essential for the upcoming special session of the Agency," the statement continued.
Moscow also urged the UN Security Council to take a decisive position against the confrontational and destabilizing actions of the United States and Israel, which must be collectively rejected.
The call was made for an immediate cessation of hostilities and for heightened efforts to return to a peaceful, diplomatic path.
