New Delhi, Dec 20 (NationPress) Uttam Mazumdar, the childhood coach of Ishan Kishan, expressed that his predictions regarding the wicketkeeper-batter's selection for the T20 World Cup have materialized after the 26-year-old was named in India's squad for the significant tournament and T20I series against New Zealand.

Kishan, who topped the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy charts with 517 runs and led Jharkhand to victory, was a surprising replacement for Shubman Gill in the T20I lineup.

His remarkable performances, including a stellar 101 in the final against Haryana, along with the management's desire for a backup wicketkeeper-batter capable of batting in the upper order, facilitated Kishan's return to the national team.

Mazumdar disclosed that he had advised Kishan during Jharkhand's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy knockout stage that a match-winning century in the final would guarantee his position in the World Cup squad, and he was thrilled that Kishan accomplished just that.

“When Jharkhand advanced to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy knockout rounds, I told Ishan, 'You've scored many runs, but if you score a century in the final and lead the team to victory, it will secure your spot in the World Cup squad.' Those words just came out naturally as I was manifesting his inclusion in the World Cup team.

“He did exactly that, and those words became a reality today. It’s a moment of pride and immense joy for all of us, especially since he had been out of the setup for two years. The way he led Jharkhand to win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy brings us great happiness,” Mazumdar told IANS from his academy in Greater Noida at SDRV School on Saturday.

Kishan’s last appearance for India was during the third T20I against Australia in Guwahati in November 2023, prior to taking a mental health hiatus and losing his BCCI central contract. Mazumdar received news of Kishan’s return to the Indian team while starting a religious ceremony in his honor.

“I received a call in the afternoon with the good news of his selection. I was unaware of it since I had been busy with a puja since morning. We have organized a Bhagavad Gita paath for Ishan starting today, running for six days. This feels like divine intervention for his inclusion in the World Cup squad,” he added.

Mazumdar believes the Kishan of 2025 showcases greater inner stillness and maturity compared to his 2023 self, a change that is evident in his consistent performances. “Ishan has developed a theraav (stillness) now, along with maturity, patience, and focus that have resulted in more consistency in his game.

“This is significant because when consistency, stillness, and determination are present in the game, everything begins to align. It’s a mindset game, and when that shifts to a positive outlook at this competitive level, an individual’s perspective changes. That transformation has occurred with Ishan.”

He has also endorsed Kishan as a sure pick for India's playing eleven, advocating for him to open the batting alongside the in-form Abhishek Sharma. “Ishan has excelled in all competitions. I doubt the team management will leave him out of the playing eleven due to his caliber. The Indian T20I team requires explosive players like him.

“During T20Is, the power play is crucial, and I believe Ishan would fit perfectly into that role. The management should consider him to open with Abhishek. We might even see two wicketkeepers in the playing eleven, given Ishan’s keeping skills,” Muzumdar added.

Amidst a delightful two days for him, Muzumdar indicated he would connect with Kishan later in the day. “I plan to speak to him tonight. He was in Jharkhand for two days and had to meet the Chief Minister. The players were jubilant as it was a historical win. It was a moment of wonder for a lifetime.

“All were uncapped players in the Jharkhand team, and Ishan successfully brought them together to achieve victory as their captain. Winning the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is a tremendous accomplishment, especially considering the formidable teams they faced. To overcome all of them and win the final is truly significant.”

Mazumdar fondly reminisces about the moment at Moinul Ul Haq Stadium in Patna when Pranav Pandey approached him to coach a seven-year-old Kishan, marking the beginning of a remarkable cricketing journey filled with tremendous highs and lows.

To this day, Kishan maintains a tradition of seeking Mazumdar's blessings before crucial matches. Mazumdar, endearingly referring to Kishan as ‘Ishu’, concluded by confidently asserting that the wicketkeeper-batter will significantly contribute to India’s title defense in the T20 World Cup.

“I believe Ishan has embarked on a new journey. The Indian team requires dynamic players like him to clinch crucial victories. With his enthusiasm and consistent scoring, I am witnessing a completely new side of Ishan.

“Given his recent performances, I am confident the team management will maximize his potential during the New Zealand series and the World Cup. I firmly believe Ishan will be utilized effectively in this Indian team,” he stated.
