New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has identified the most formidable playing XI for the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as they gear up for the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), commencing on March 28.

After a disappointing 2025 season where CSK ended up at the bottom of the table, marking the franchise’s worst performance in history, the team has made several significant changes through the auction and transfer window to revamp their squad.

Key changes include releasing seasoned players such as Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, while acquiring Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals via a trade. The franchise is also focusing on young talents like Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma.

Jaffer envisions Samson opening the innings alongside Ayush Mhatre, the captain of India U19, to provide an aggressive start. He recommends that captain Ruturaj Gaikwad bat at number three to stabilize the innings and maintain balance in the top order.

For the middle order, Jaffer has positioned young South African batter Dewald Brevis at number four, with India’s T20 World Cup 2026 all-rounder Shivam Dube at number five.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is slated for number six. Despite a relatively quiet season last year, scoring 196 runs while primarily batting at numbers seven or eight, his experience is deemed vital for the team.

According to Jaffer, only one between Kartik Sharma or Prashant Veer will be included in the playing XI, filling the number seven role.

In the bowling lineup, he has chosen Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad as the primary spinners, with Hosein also capable of contributing with the bat at number eight.

For the pace attack, Jaffer has selected Matt Henry and Khaleel Ahmed, with Anshul Kamboj as the impact player.

Here’s Wasim Jaffer’s projected XI for CSK:

Sanju Samson, Ayush Mhatre, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni, Kartik Sharma/Prashant Veer, Akeal Hosein, Noor Ahmad, Matt Henry, Khaleel Ahmed

Impact Player: Anshul Kamboj

CSK will kick off their IPL 2026 journey against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 at Baraspara Stadium in Guwahati.

Point of View

The team's potential appears promising, and fans should be eager to see how these changes play out in the upcoming IPL season.
