New Delhi, May 8 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar engaged in discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in New Delhi. He noted that the timing of Araghchi's visit coincides with India's decisive response to the heinous Pahalgam terrorist attack, emphasizing that the strikes on terror infrastructure in neighboring Pakistan are targeted and measured. Jaishankar clarified that escalating the situation is not India's intention.

"Your visit comes at a critical moment as we respond to a particularly barbaric terrorist attack on April 22 in Jammu and Kashmir. This incident necessitated our action on May 7 to target cross-border terrorist infrastructure. Our approach was targeted and measured," Jaishankar stated during the opening remarks at the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting.

In light of Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei's concerns regarding the escalating India-Pakistan conflict, India took the opportunity to provide the visiting Iranian delegation with a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

"It is not our intention to escalate this situation. However, any military aggression against us will undoubtedly provoke a very firm response. As a neighbor and close ally, it is essential for you to grasp this context," he added.

While co-chairing the Joint Commission meeting, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations, Jaishankar underscored the strengthening of India-Iran relations and the advancements in various areas of cooperation.

"In recent years, our collaboration has developed across multiple dimensions. There are challenges we must confront. Prime Minister Modi and President Pezeshkian met in Kazan in October 2024 and provided guidance for further enhancing our relationship. They also held a phone conversation on April 26," he indicated.

The 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations serves as a reminder of the profound connection and friendship between India and Iran.

Additionally, the meeting featured the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) regarding the implementation of the Bilateral Agreement on Customs Cooperation and Medical Products Regulation.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Baqaei announced Araghchi's arrival in New Delhi for an official visit aimed at reviewing the Iran-India bilateral relationship and discussing regional and international developments.

"FM Araghchi and his Indian counterpart will co-chair the 20th Iran-India Joint Commission and sign several bilateral documents to bolster cooperation in economic, customs, and health sectors. The deep-rooted friendship between Iran and India lays the foundation for mutually beneficial relations. Together, we should strive to enhance peace, security, and stability across our regions and beyond," he noted on X.

Foreign Minister Araghchi previously condemned the Pahalgam attack, extending condolences to India.

"Iran strongly and unequivocally denounces the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We express our heartfelt condolences to the people and government of India," he stated on X.

Before visiting India, the Iranian Foreign Minister had met with Pakistani officials earlier in the week, leading a political delegation and engaging in discussions with Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar.
