Mumbai, March 28 (NationPress) Head coach of Mumbai Indians, Mahela Jayawardene, commended Hardik Pandya for his remarkable evolution as a leader just before the team's inaugural match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against the renowned Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). This match is set to take place at the historic Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

“I first encountered Hardik back in 2017. He was a young, vibrant talent brimming with energy, which I have always found admirable. Even now, his enthusiasm for the game remains unparalleled. He is deeply passionate about cricket and engages in discussions about it often. Having been part of the Mumbai Indians for eight years, witnessing his growth in terms of leadership and maturity on the field has been incredible. He is arguably one of the finest all-rounders in white-ball cricket,” Jayawardene expressed in a statement on the Mumbai Indians' official site.

He also noted how Hardik's unique approach distinguishes him from others. “At the beginning of his career, we needed to rein him in a bit because he was like a powerhouse on the field… whether batting, bowling, or fielding. The work ethic he displayed as a younger player was exceptional,” he added.

Reflecting upon the challenges Pandya has faced due to injuries and workload over his decade-long career, Mahela remarked, “The injuries he sustained later took a toll on him, especially while playing Test cricket. We had to implement significant workload management. Now he has a better understanding of this, and we have structured methods to manage his workload effectively. It's crucial to manage a player at such a pivotal stage in their career.”

“His skill development and work ethic remain impressive even today. He diligently focuses on training and maintaining his fitness both during and outside the season. It’s gratifying to see how he has matured both as a person and a player,” he added.

Looking ahead to the season opener, Mahela discussed the challenge of assembling the perfect playing XI and the critical importance of squad depth.

“It’s a wonderful dilemma to have so many excellent options. We face a variety of opponents and conditions… After our game in Mumbai, we have two consecutive away matches. Those options will be essential; squad depth is key for various reasons, including potential injuries or differing conditions… this is always at the forefront of our planning.

“Having experienced players on the bench is beneficial. It can be tough when we have outstanding players who aren't in the lineup, but that's part of franchise cricket. Our role is to cultivate an environment where everyone feels valued, and plays for the collective goal of the team,” he concluded.

Under Hardik’s stewardship, the Mumbai Indians made a commendable recovery last season, securing their place in the playoffs. However, their campaign concluded following a loss to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the second Qualifier. The five-time champions have not clinched a title since 2020 and are eager to break this streak in the upcoming season.
