Nalanda, May 4 (NationPress) The Khelo India Youth Games kicked off at the Sports Complex in Rajgir on Sunday. The inaugural day featured an exhilarating Kabaddi match, with players and coaches nationwide commending the organizers for their exceptional event setup. The first game in Pool 'A' for the Under-18 girls' category saw Haryana face off against Punjab, where Haryana clinched a narrow victory with a score of 33-32.
“This was our initial game, and the girls were slightly fatigued from being called in early, which affected our defensive play. We will enhance our performance in the next match,” said a team member.
“I have never witnessed such remarkable arrangements in Bihar. I urge the Government to continue organizing more events like this if they wish to elevate Kabaddi as a sport. Khelo India is an international-level event that will significantly benefit the growth of all sports,” commented Sita, the assistant coach of the Haryana Kabaddi team, in an interview with IANS.
Despite the close defeat, Punjab captain Ganga Sharma expressed hope for a better performance against Rajasthan on Monday, stating, “The match went well. We faced a strong Haryana team and performed admirably. Our defense needs improvement, and we will strive to do better against Rajasthan tomorrow.”
“The arrangements here are excellent—from meals and travel to accommodations. This initiative is a significant opportunity for underprivileged athletes, enabling them to develop and excel,” Ganga added.
The Rural Development Minister of Bihar, Shrawon Kumar, reflected on the ongoing Games, hoping it inspires youth to elevate the state's name nationwide. “Khelo India Youth Games are being held across the nation. I thank the government for letting Bihar host the opening leg and congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya,” he noted.
“Boys and girls from eight states have come to participate in Kabaddi and are showcasing tremendous talent. More youth are engaging in sports in Bihar, which is beneficial for the state's and the country's reputation,” Kumar shared.
In Pool 'A' of the Under-18 boys' category, Haryana faced Karnataka, achieving a resounding victory with a score of 57 points to Karnataka's 31. “The facilities here are fantastic. PM Modi is making significant efforts for the youth, and such initiatives are crucial for athletes' development,” stated Haryana captain Jai Hind.
