Amaravati, June 12 (NationPress) A court in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh has placed journalist and political analyst VV Krishnam Raju in judicial custody for 14 days. This follows allegations of him making offensive remarks about women from the Amaravati area during a discussion on the Telugu news channel Sakshi, which is owned by former chief minister and YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Raju was taken into custody on Wednesday night in Visakhapatnam and was subsequently presented in the Mangalgiri court, which has ordered his judicial custody until June 26.
Allegations suggest that Raju made derogatory statements referring to Amaravati as a ‘capital of prostitutes’ during a live debate on June 6.
Additionally, police have arrested senior journalist and Sakshi TV anchor Kommineni Srinivas, who moderated the contentious debate.
A case against both journalists and the management of Sakshi TV was filed on June 9 at the Thullur Police Station in Guntur, invoking several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Information Technology Act, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The FIR includes charges under sections 79, 196(1), 353(2), 299, 356(2), 61(1) BNS, 67 ITA-2008, 3(1)(U), and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
A police team arrested Srinivasa Rao from his home in Hyderabad on Monday and brought him to Guntur, where a court has also placed him in judicial custody for 14 days, transferring him to Guntur district jail.
This incident has sparked a substantial controversy surrounding the comments allegedly made during the broadcast.
On a complaint filed by Khambampati Sirisha, director of the State Madiga Corporation, the police have formally charged Srinivasa Rao, Krishnam Raju, and the management of Sakshi TV for the purported derogatory remarks against women and farmers of Amaravati.
