Humayun Kabir Declines to Engage with Tribunal on Voter List Controversy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 11 (NationPress) The Supreme Court has mandated the establishment of a tribunal to address appeals from individuals whose names have been excluded from the voter list during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative. However, the chairman of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, Humayun Kabir, declared on Wednesday that he will not seek the tribunal's intervention.
“I will never approach the tribunal,” asserted Kabir.
On the same day, the Aam Janata Unnayan Party held a protest gathering and a deputation program against the SIR at Textile More in Berhampore, located in the Murshidabad district. Kabir participated in the protest and voiced his opinions regarding the tribunal.
The Bharatpur MLA elaborated on his reluctance to engage with the tribunal, stating, “Going to the tribunal could mean a delay of three to four years in resolving this matter. During that time, voters will lose their voting rights.”
He further expressed determination to escalate protests if necessary, saying, “If needed, I will conduct block-by-block dharnas with voters whose names are being reviewed in the final voter list.”
Having been previously suspended from the Trinamool Congress, Kabir attributed the current state of affairs to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
During the protest, a lorry served as an improvised stage from which Kabir addressed his party supporters. Numerous party leaders were in attendance, asserting that the names of approximately 11 lakh voters in Murshidabad district are currently under review.
Subsequently, an eight-member delegation presented a memorandum to the district administration. Although the District Magistrate was unavailable, the Additional District Magistrate accepted the memorandum on his behalf.
The day prior to the protest, on Tuesday, the Shaktipur police station issued a notice to Kabir and his wife, requesting their appearance before the police, reportedly regarding claims about a house constructed on a drainage channel without altering the land-use status in official records.
In response to the notice, Kabir remarked, “I am unfazed by this. They will do whatever they wish. After twenty-two years, they have finally taken notice. I am aware of who is responsible, and so is everyone else. I will signal the end for the Chief Minister.”
