Is Trinamool Congress Ignoring Humayun Kabir's Membership Cancellation?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 24 (NationPress) The leadership of the Trinamool Congress has resolved not to engage with the office of West Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee regarding the cancellation of suspended party legislator Humayun Kabir's membership from the Assembly, even after he announced his new political formation, the Janata Unnayan Party, just two days ago.
A senior official within the West Bengal Cabinet indicated that there are two significant motivations behind this decision not to pursue Kabir's membership suspension.
"Firstly, there are just over six months remaining until the state Assembly elections next year, which will lead to the establishment of a new state Cabinet. Therefore, even if his membership were to be revoked temporarily, there would be no by-election for Bharatpur, the area he represents, during this interim period. Consequently, our (Trinamool Congress) leadership has opted to allow Kabir to retain his position during this time," the Cabinet member elaborated.
Furthermore, he mentioned that moving to cancel Kabir's membership would convey to the public that the Trinamool Congress is taking him seriously.
"This is precisely what our leadership aims to avoid. Hence, we have decided to completely disregard him (Humayun Kabir) at this juncture. Our (Trinamool Congress) leadership has also instructed us to refrain from commenting on Kabir or responding to any of his disparaging remarks about our party," the Cabinet member added.
Initially, Kabir had expressed his intention to resign as a legislator from Bharatpur immediately prior to unveiling his new party on December 22.
However, he later reversed his decision, stating that he would remain an independent legislator from Bharatpur until the upcoming state Assembly elections.
He has already declared his intention to run as a candidate for the Janata Unnayan Party from two Assembly constituencies in his home district of Murshidabad.
Additionally, he has expressed his willingness to form alliances with all 'anti-BJP' and 'anti-Trinamool Congress' factions within the state.
