Kolkata, Dec 7 (NationPress) In a surprising reversal, suspended Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir declared on Sunday that he will not be resigning from his position as an MLA. This statement comes just days after he had announced plans to step down as the Trinamool Congress representative for Bharatpur in the Murshidabad district on December 8.
While addressing a group of journalists, the Bharatpur legislator remarked: "I had previously stated my intention to resign. However, constituents who supported Yusuf Pathan as an MP from the Baharampur constituency have pointed out his absence. Numerous documents require my signature. Consequently, the people are urging me not to resign. They elected me to serve their interests and will support me again if I fulfill my responsibilities. Therefore, I will remain as the MLA for the people of Bharatpur."
This change in stance from the Trinamool leader occurred just a day after he laid the foundation stone for a mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad district.
His actions led to his suspension from the Trinamool Congress.
On Saturday, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh clarified that Kabir's suspension was not due to his mosque construction plans, but rather for allegedly attempting to incite religious extremism during a religious event.
On December 4, Humayun Kabir mentioned he would resign as an MLA by December 8 and reveal a new political party on December 22.
"I will be stepping down from my role as the MLA of Bharatpur either this Friday or the following Monday. After that, I will announce my new political party on December 22. My commitment to lay the foundation for the Babri Mosque in Beldanga will remain unchanged," Kabir stated shortly after Firhad Hakim, West Bengal's Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Minister, publicly announced his suspension from the party.
Kabir has faced multiple warnings from the Trinamool Congress leadership in the past for allegedly engaging in activities against the party and making public statements that caused embarrassment. Ultimately, the Trinamool Congress formally announced his suspension on Thursday.
