Kolkata, Dec 8 (NationPress) - Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir is set to have his position altered in the West Bengal Assembly following his suspension from the Trinamool Congress, as stated by a senior party official on Monday.
His suspension came after he controversially proceeded with the foundation stone laying for a 'Babri Masjid-style' mosque in Murshidabad.
Nirmal Ghosh, the TMC Chief Whip in the state Assembly, mentioned that the party is “monitoring the situation” and decisions will be made shortly.
“We are keeping an eye on the situation. A decision regarding the seating for the suspended MLAs, including Kabir, will be concluded in the following days,” he stated.
Kabir, previously suspended for six years due to anti-party conduct, declared on Sunday that he would continue as a Trinamool MLA, retracting his earlier claim of resigning from the party.
With the winter and interim budget sessions approaching, the Trinamool Parliamentary Party has opted to relocate Kabir’s seat. Sources indicate this is to create a buffer from the rebel MLA, who could potentially embarrass the party as the current Assembly term draws to a close.
After being released from judicial custody, Kabir expressed his intent to participate in the upcoming Assembly session.
Reports suggest that Kabir may be seated adjacent to another suspended TMC MLA, Partha Chatterjee, who was suspended in 2022 following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate linked to the school service commission recruitment corruption scandal. Chatterjee, a former TMC General Secretary, recently expressed his desire to join the Assembly session after his release.
It’s important to note that only a few months are left before this Assembly term ends. Apart from the winter session, an interim budget session is also scheduled, following which the Assembly will dissolve ahead of the elections next year.
Last week, Kabir faced suspension from the TMC after he defied party orders by laying the foundation stone of a Babri Masjid-style mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad district. This event, which occurred on Saturday, further complicated matters for the party leadership, especially for Mamata Banerjee.
