Does Humayun Kabir Rule Out Alliance with Congress While Eyeing AIMIM and Left Front?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 27 (NationPress) Humayun Kabir, a suspended legislator from the Trinamool Congress and the founder of the newly established Janata Unnayan Party, announced on Tuesday that he has no intention of forming an alliance with the Congress for the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal.
Instead, he expressed interest in collaborating with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), founded by Asaduddin Owaisi, and the CPI(M)-led Left Front.
Kabir, representing the Bharatpur Assembly constituency in the minority-centric Murshidabad district, elaborated on his rationale for dismissing the prospect of an alliance with Congress.
He noted that while Congress still plays a role, it is significantly diminished compared to the past, primarily in the minority-heavy districts of Murshidabad and Malda.
“In these two districts, there’s no way we will concede any seats to Congress, although I am open to an understanding with AIMIM there. For the other districts, I am willing to consider an alliance with the CPI(M)-led Left Front. Discussions regarding potential seat-sharing agreements are currently underway,” Kabir stated.
He further explained that in both minority-dominated districts, the contest will chiefly involve the Trinamool Congress and his new political party, particularly in Malda. “Malda has 12 Assembly constituencies, where the direct competition will be between the Janata Unnayan Party and the Trinamool Congress in 11 constituencies. Only in the English Bazar constituency will the contest feature the Bharatiya Janata Party against us,” Kabir added.
However, he did not comment on the potential for collaboration with the All India Secular Front (AISF), which is eager to negotiate a seat-sharing agreement with the Left Front.
The AISF leadership has previously stated that any considerations for an understanding with the Janata Unnayan Party would only occur after Kabir retracts and publicly apologizes for past communal remarks.
Kabir had been a controversial figure within the Trinamool Congress, getting suspended from the party a few months ago following his announcement regarding the construction of a Babri Mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad, modeled after the original structure in Ayodhya, which was demolished on December 6, 1992.
