Will Humayun Kabir's Party Challenge 182 Seats in Bengal Assembly Polls?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 27 (NationPress) - Humayun Kabir, the suspended leader of the Trinamool Congress and MLA from Bharatpur, announced on Saturday that his newly-formed Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) intends to contest 182 seats in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.
He indicated a willingness to form an electoral alliance with the Indian Secular Front (ISF) and AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi. However, the ISF has yet to comment on any potential collaboration with Kabir's party.
Previously, Kabir had mentioned plans to contest 135 out of the 294 Assembly seats in the state, aiming to secure at least 90 seats. The Bharatpur MLA is optimistic about his potential influence in the government formation next year.
On Saturday, he remarked, "Our singular aim is to halt the BJP. Those labeling me a traitor, including Mamata Banerjee, are the ones who have consistently let down the Muslim community. They failed to uphold commitments regarding the Waqf Act, claiming they would manage it, yet ultimately deceived the populace."
He elaborated on his electoral strategy, stating, "What outcome are we likely to achieve by competing in 182 seats? I assure you, the results will be remarkable—something even seasoned politicians in West Bengal have not accomplished." He added, "In the future political landscape of Bengal, I see a partnership with the ISF. If AIMIM decides to join, they are most welcome."
However, no details regarding seat sharing have been made public yet. Humayun indicated he will await responses from potential alliance partners until December 31 before announcing the specifics.
Kabir plans to campaign in three Assembly constituencies daily, utilizing a helicopter for efficiency. He remains unconcerned about the Trinamool Congress, BJP, Congress, or CPIM.
In response, Abhishek Banerjee, the All-India general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, commented on Kabir's declaration, stating, "Anyone can establish a party. What’s the issue? Individuals have the power to choose. The public is intelligent; they understand. In 2019, you (Kabir) joined the BJP, a party involved in the Babri Masjid demolition. If you aspire to build a mandir or masjid, you may do so. Just don’t politicize the affair," Banerjee asserted during a press conference.
