AIMIM Withdraws from Alliance with Humayun Kabir Ahead of Bengal Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 10 (NationPress) The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, made headlines on Friday by declaring its withdrawal from the electoral alliance with the newly formed political party of ex-Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir. This decision comes ahead of the two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal.
The AIMIM's withdrawal follows the release of a video-cum-audio clip by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which allegedly features Kabir making contentious remarks with an unknown individual, suggesting plans to manipulate minority votes in West Bengal to favor the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In a post on its official social media platform X, AIMIM announced the end of its electoral partnership with Kabir. The party emphasized its commitment to providing marginalized communities with a strong political voice. However, in light of the recent revelations regarding Kabir's comments, AIMIM has chosen to distance itself from this alliance.
Additionally, AIMIM confirmed its intention to contest the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal independently, without any agreements with other political entities.
“The statements made by Humayun Kabir illustrate the vulnerabilities faced by Muslims in Bengal. AIMIM cannot align with any remarks that compromise the integrity of the Muslim community. Therefore, we are officially terminating our alliance with Kabir’s party. The Muslims in Bengal represent one of the most impoverished and neglected groups, and despite years of secular governance, they have seen little improvement. AIMIM aims to give voice to these marginalized communities in every state. We will be contesting the Bengal elections INDEPENDENTLY and will not seek alliances with any party going forward,” stated AIMIM's social media announcement.
On Thursday, the Trinamool Congress accused Kabir of engaging in a Rs 1,000 crore deal with the BJP to fragment minority votes in West Bengal constituencies where his candidates will run alongside AIMIM in the upcoming elections.
The TMC also shared a purported audio clip where Kabir seems to be discussing these issues with an unidentified person.
However, Kabir quickly refuted the allegations, asserting that the video released by the Trinamool Congress was fabricated and even threatened legal action against the party for what he termed as baseless accusations.
