Kolkata, March 17 (NationPress) The internal disciplinary committee of the Trinamool Congress Legislative party in West Bengal is expressing dissatisfaction with the response to the show-cause notice issued to Humayun Kabir, the MLA representing the Bharatpur Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district, concerning his controversial statements about Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari made last week.

Kabir has been called to appear before the disciplinary committee on Tuesday to clarify the issues that prompted their dissatisfaction with his response.

On that day, he will also find out if the committee will recommend further disciplinary action regarding the situation.

The show-cause notice was served to him by State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay on March 13 during the ongoing budget session. Humayun Kabir submitted a two-page reply to the one-page notice on March 15.

In his reply, Kabir asserted that he does not regret his comments and does not view them as a breach of discipline. He stated that he would not retract his statements.

On Monday, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay informed reporters that Kabir's repeated controversial comments have harmed the party's ideological position. “What he expressed came from his personal perspective. However, as an elected official, he must refrain from making certain remarks publicly,” Chattopadhyay noted.

He added that when Kabir appears before the disciplinary committee, he will receive specific instructions. “He must follow those instructions closely,” Chattopadhyay stated. Nevertheless, he did not specify what disciplinary measures, if any, could be suggested against him for his repeated violation of party discipline.

Kabir has a history of making controversial comments that have put his party in an awkward position.

Previously, he faced backlash for saying that Hindus in the minority-dominated Murshidabad district would be “cut and thrown into the Bhagirathi River.”

Last November, the Trinamool Congress leadership issued him a show-cause notice for making statements against the party.

After the Trinamool Congress nominated Yusuf Pathan, a former Indian cricketer and current Lok Sabha member from the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency, for the 2024 general elections, Kabir criticized his own party leadership for selecting an “outsider” from the region.
