Chennai, Jan 3 (NationPress) The formidable Kalinga Lancers are poised to take on the rookie Ranchi Royals in their inaugural match of the Men's Hockey India League (HIL) at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai this Sunday.

After a rigorous pre-season camp aimed at enhancing structure, teamwork, and match readiness, Kalinga Lancers are eager to kick off the new season. Despite being newcomers in the Hockey India League, the Ranchi Royals boast a strong foundation, retaining key players from the former franchise, Gonasika.

In anticipation of the opening match, head coach Jay Stacy emphasized the significance of thorough preparation and maintaining composure.

“Our team has put in tremendous effort during preparations, focusing on clarity in roles and discipline on the field. The opening match is crucial for settling in and executing smart hockey,” stated Stacy. “Although Ranchi is new to the league, their solid core and talented players will present a tough challenge. Our Indian players trained early with Technical and Strategy Coach Pascal Kina, followed by the Australians and Belgians joining us after Christmas. The productive sessions in Bhubaneswar have helped us unify as a team.”

Last season, the Lancers were the second-highest goal scorers and aim to uphold their attacking strategy this year while enhancing their defensive game.

Co-Captain Arthur Van Doren shared his enthusiasm and balanced approach for the upcoming season.

“We’re thrilled to embark on a new season and are determined to give our best,” said Van Doren. “Being one of the top-scoring teams last season, we intend to maintain that attacking mindset. At the same time, reducing goals conceded is a major priority. Our squad has a strong defensive line, skilled forwards, and a mix of experienced players and newcomers.”

Co-Captain Sanjay echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of consistency throughout the season.

“The excitement within the team for the new season is palpable,” he noted. “Our preparations have been solid, focusing on taking each match as it comes and delivering our best performance every time we step onto the field. The goal is to function as a cohesive unit and perform consistently to meet our objectives.”

The Kalinga Lancers will play two matches in Chennai, with their second game against the defending champions, Bengal Tigers, on Thursday, January 8.
