Did Haasan's Remarks on Kannada Language Spark a Misunderstanding?

Bengaluru, June 3 (NationPress) In light of the ongoing language controversy, superstar Kamal Haasan addressed the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce through a letter on Tuesday, asserting that the dispute surrounding his comments on the origins of the Kannada language stems from a misunderstanding. He emphasized his stance against the dominance of one language over another.

The letter was directed to Narasimhalu, the President of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, Bengaluru.

Kamal Haasan expressed, “I appreciate your letter dated May 30, 2025. With profound respect for the people of Karnataka, I wish to clarify my position sincerely.

“It saddens me that my statement during the 'Thug Life' audio launch, made out of genuine affection for the legendary Dr. Rajkumar's family, particularly Shiva Rajkumar, has been misinterpreted and taken out of context. My intention was to convey our unity and not to undermine Kannada in any manner. There is no contention regarding the rich heritage of the Kannada language.”

“Much like Tamil, Kannada possesses a remarkable literary and cultural history that I have always respected. Throughout my career, I have valued the warmth and kindness shown to me by the Kannada-speaking community. I declare with a clear conscience: my admiration for the language is genuine, and I hold deep respect for the love that Kannadigas have for their mother tongue,” stated Kamal Haasan.

“My connection with Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, and all languages of this land is heartfelt and enduring. I have consistently advocated for the equal dignity of all Indian languages and oppose the supremacy of any single language over another, as such dominance threatens the linguistic fabric of our nation,” he asserted.

“I understand the language of cinema. Cinema serves as a universal language that embodies love and unity. My statement was solely meant to foster that connection among us,” he reiterated.

“This love and bond, instilled in me by my elders, is what I intended to share. It was from this love that Shivanna attended the audio launch. I deeply regret that he faced embarrassment due to this misunderstanding. However, I am confident that our genuine love and respect for one another will only strengthen,” Kamal Haasan concluded.

“Cinema should act as a bridge uniting people, not a wall that separates them. This was the essence of my message, and I have never sought to incite public unrest or animosity,” he stated.

“I sincerely wish for my words to be received in the spirit they were meant, and that my lasting affection for Karnataka, its people, and their language is recognized in its true context. I firmly believe this misunderstanding is temporary and serves as an opportunity to reaffirm our mutual love and respect,” Kamal Haasan concluded.

Kamal Haasan previously remarked that the Kannada language was derived from Tamil, which ignited controversy.

The actor has filed a petition seeking legal protection.

The Karnataka High Court has admonished him, urging him not to misuse his right to free speech in ways that could offend sentiments.

The court questioned why the police should provide him protection for his erroneous statements and required him to clarify whether he intends to apologize by noon.
