New Delhi, July 25 (NationPress) Kamal Haasan, the renowned cinematic icon and political figure from Tamil Nadu, made his official entry into national politics on Friday by taking the oath as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha.
Delivering his oath in Tamil, Haasan emphasized his cultural heritage and civic responsibilities, asserting, “As an Indian, I will fulfill my duty.”
This induction into the Upper House signifies a pivotal moment in a political journey that started with idealistic enthusiasm and has matured into strategic realism.
Haasan established the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) in February 2018, positioning it as a centrist, non-Dravidian alternative to the prevailing DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam).
His initial campaigns focused on transparency, community governance, and moving away from established political divides.
During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, MNM vied for 37 seats and achieved a modest vote share, performing comparatively better in urban areas.
In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Haasan contested from Coimbatore South, where he faced a narrow defeat against the BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan.
Despite this setback, MNM recorded over 2.6 percent of the statewide vote, according to electoral records.
After facing internal challenges and limited electoral success, Haasan adjusted his political strategy.
In March 2024, MNM allied with the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance ahead of the general elections, opting for collaboration over ideological separation.
The DMK's sweeping victory in all 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu was partially attributed to MNM's support, and as a result, Haasan was offered a Rajya Sabha seat as part of the alliance’s power-sharing agreement.
He chose the Upper House instead of a direct Lok Sabha run, citing national interest and the necessity for a broader platform to articulate public concerns.
Haasan’s nomination received backing from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and other prominent leaders, leading to his unopposed election on June 12.
His entrance into Parliament is widely regarded as a tactical advancement, providing MNM with a voice in national discussions while laying the groundwork for future ambitions at the state level.
At MNM’s eighth anniversary earlier this year, Haasan hinted at this transition, stating, “This year, our voice will resonate in Parliament. Next year, your voice will be acknowledged in the State Assembly.” His political journey now enters a new chapter, blending cinematic charm with legislative accountability.
