Chennai, May 28 (NationPress) The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu has revealed the name of actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan as one of four candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections set for June 19. This announcement came from Chief Minister and DMK Chief M.K. Stalin.
Among the four Rajya Sabha seats available in Tamil Nadu, the DMK will be contesting three, while the fourth has been given to the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) as part of a prior electoral agreement between the two parties.
As the founder and president of MNM, Kamal Haasan has been nominated to represent his party in the Rajya Sabha.
The DMK candidates for the three seats include senior advocate P. Wilson, former Union Minister S.R. Sivalingam, and celebrated Tamil poet and writer Rokaiya Malik, famously known as Kavignar Salma.
P. Wilson, who holds degrees in B.Sc. and B.L., is a sitting Rajya Sabha MP and a distinguished lawyer at the Supreme Court of India. He is widely acknowledged for representing the state in numerous high-profile legal cases and is a respected legal authority within the DMK.
S.R. Sivalingam is a seasoned leader from the DMK, having previously served as Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. His nomination signifies the party’s strategy to merge legal acumen with administrative experience in the upper house.
Rokiaya Malik, known as Kavignar Salma, is a prominent figure in contemporary Tamil literature, praised for her poetry and novels that address themes of gender, identity, and social justice. Her inclusion underscores the DMK’s dedication to cultural representation and empowering women.
The DMK's choice to reserve a seat for the MNM is perceived as a tactical move to fortify their alliance and extend their influence on a national scale.
With this development, Kamal Haasan is poised to enter Parliament, marking a pivotal chapter in his political career.
The Rajya Sabha elections are anticipated to be a mere formality, as the ruling coalition possesses the requisite strength in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to secure victory for all four nominees.
